The Cleveland Guardians placed reliever Paul Sewald on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday after an MRI revealed a right shoulder strain.
Sewald, 34, was injured pitching to Minnesota’s Ryan Jeffers in the fifth inning of Monday’s 11-1 home loss to the Twins. Sewald faced two batters to open the inning and struck out Ty France before exiting with shoulder inflammation.
In other moves, the Guardians recalled left-hander Joey Cantillo to fill Sewald’s spot, selected the contract of right-hander Vince Velasquez from Triple-A Columbus and optioned righty Cody Bolton to Columbus.
Right-hander Shane Bieber was transferred from the 15- to the 60-day injured list following reconstruction of a tear in his right elbow ulnar collateral ligament.
Sewald is 1-1 in his first season in Cleveland with one save, a 6.17 ERA, two walks and 15 strikeouts in 11 2/3 innings over 14 relief appearances.
He owns a 21-26 career record with 85 saves, a 4.15 ERA, 128 walks and 465 strikeouts in 388 innings over 373 relief appearances for the New York Mets (2017-20), Seattle Mariners (2021-23), Arizona Diamondbacks (2023-24) and Guardians.
Sewald also is 1-0 with six saves, an 8.10 ERA, five walks and 22 strikeouts in 13 1/3 innings over 13 playoff appearances with Seattle (2022) and Arizona (2023).
