Arizona’s bullpen took another hit Thursday as the Diamondbacks placed right-hander Justin Martinez on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation.
The team also transferred closer A.J. Puk to the 60-day injured list due to left elbow inflammation and called up left-hander Jose Castillo from Triple-A Reno.
Martinez saw a dip in his velocity in Wednesday’s outing against the New York Mets, with manager Torey Lovullo noting it as well.
“We definitely know that things aren’t the same right now,” Lovullo said, “and we’re going to figure that out with him.”
Martinez, 23, is 1-1 with three saves and a 2.70 ERA in 12 relief appearances this season.
He is 6-7 with 12 saves and a 3.59 ERA in 86 career relief appearances with Arizona.
Puk, 30, has a 3.38 ERA over his first eight outings, while converting all four of his save opportunities.
Acquired from the Miami Marlins last season, Puk is 17-20 with a 3.53 ERA and 26 saves over 212 appearances (four starts) with the Oakland Athletics (2019, 2021-22), Marlins (2023-24) and Diamondbacks.
Castillo, 29, has a 1.69 ERA in five relief appearances with the Aces this season. He went 3-3 with a 4.24 ERA in 40 career relief appearances with the San Diego Padres (2018-19, 2022-23).
