Tigers’ late outburst sends Angels to 6th straight loss

Dillon Dingler

Dillon Dingler’s tiebreaking three-run home run in a five-run eighth inning propelled the Detroit Tigers over the Los Angeles Angels 10-4 in the opener of a four-game series on Thursday night in Anaheim, Calif.

The Angels led 4-2 going into the eighth before the Tigers teed off on Los Angeles’ bullpen with four singles, a walk and Dingler’s homer. Most of the damage was done against Reid Detmers, who gave up four of the five runs.

The Tigers added three runs in the ninth to send the Angels to their sixth loss in a row.

Angels star Mike Trout (left knee soreness) did not play after exiting Wednesday’s game.

Detmers (0-2), who threw a no-hitter for the Angels in 2022, has allowed nine runs while recording only one out in his last two appearances.

Dingler’s homer snapped a 4-4 tie for Detroit, which also got home runs from Javier Baez, Gleyber Torres and Spencer Torkelson. Logan O’Hoppe and Jorge Soler each homered for Los Angeles.

Tigers starter Casey Mize (5-1) was not at his best, giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts, but stuck around long enough to get the win with seven innings.

O’Hoppe’s homer with one out in the second off Mize put the Angels up 1-0, but the Tigers responded with two homers in the third to take a 2-1 lead

Baez led off the third against Angels starter Yusei Kikuchi with his second homer of the season, and two outs later Torres went deep, his fourth of the year.

The Angels regained the lead at 3-2 in the bottom of the third after Zach Neto singled with one out, stole second and scored on Soler’s two-run homer.

The Angels added to their lead in the fourth when Kevin Newman, starting at third base for Luis Rengifo (rest), singled with two on and two outs to drive home Jo Adell and increase the hosts’ advantage to 4-2.

Kikuchi managed to get through five innings, inducing Andy Ibanez to line out to Newman at third with two on and two outs, his outing complete after 93 pitches.
