Carson Young shoots 64, takes one-shot lead at Myrtle Beach

Carson Young

Carson Young fired the best round of the day, a 7-under 64, to move into the lead through three rounds of the ONEflight Myrtle Beach Classic on Saturday in South Carolina.

Young, who began the day at 6 under for the tournament, played bogey-free golf for the second straight round, and he highlighted his rainy day with an eagle on the par-5 15th hole to get to 13-under 200 at Dunes Golf and Beach Club.

The native of Anderson, S.C., is looking for his first tour win. Young, who golfed collegiately at Clemson, has one top-10 finish this season. He finished tied for 10th at the Puerto Rico Open in March.

The 30-year-old described it as “awesome” to be playing close to home.

“I got my whole family down here, my little girl and my mom and brother and my wife’s parents and her brother,” Young said. “It’s been cool to have family out here and a bunch of support with friends. I hear a bunch of “go Tigers” out there and guys that I haven’t seen in years. … It kind of just feels like old times.”

Harry Higgs followed up a 66 on Friday with a 68 and moved into second place by himself at 12-under 201. He survived two early bogeys and had five birdies for the day.

Higgs said he was “thrilled to shoot under par.”

“I’m not great in the rain. Today was hopefully some good momentum for rain golf for what seems like we’re going to do again tomorrow,” Higgs said. “Yeah, just guessing all day, and fortunately I guessed (correctly) most of the time, and stayed in it, didn’t lose my mind, which was nice.”

Second-round co-leaders Mackenzie Hughes of Canada and Chile’s Cristobal Del Solar had diverging outcomes.

Hughes shot a 70 — two bogeys and three birdies – to sit alone in third place at 11 under for the tourney.

Del Solar opened with a birdie, but it was the first of just two for the day. He had three bogeys on the front nine, two more on the back nine plus a double-bogey, and finished with a 5-over 76. He is in a nine-way tie for 31st.
