Brendan Donovan hammered a key two-run home run and Masyn Winn recorded four hits as the St. Louis Cardinals overcame the host Baltimore Orioles, winning 6-4 on Wednesday night to take the final two games of the three-game series.

Donovan finished with three hits and Lars Nootbaar added two hits as the Cardinals won for the fifth time in six games.

Jackson Holliday produced three hits, including a lead-off single in the ninth for the Orioles. Cedric Mullins, Dylan Carlson and Ryan Mountcastle had two hits for Baltimore, which has lost on back-to-back nights following a season-best three-game winning streak.

John King (2-0) was the winning pitcher with one inning of relief and Ryan Helsley picked up his 12th save by working the ninth despite allowing two singles. Cardinals starter Miles Mikolas gave up four runs on nine hits in four innings.

Cade Povich’s start for Baltimore ended after 4 2/3 innings, yielding five runs and eight hits plus three walks despite striking out nine. The Orioles have lost their last four games started by Povich (1-4).

The combination of Nootbaar, Winn and Donovan atop the St. Louis batting order combined to go 9-for-15 at the plate.

The Orioles went up 1-0 in the second when Mullins’ infield single resulted in a run when Mikolas made an errant throw. Baltimore tacked on another run when Maverick Handley, the next batter, grounded out as Ramon Urias crossed the plate before Holliday doubled in the third run.

Jordan Walker’s two-out, two-run single in the fourth brought the Cardinals to within 3-2.

Carlson’s RBI single in the bottom of the fourth against his former team stretched Baltimore’s lead to 4-2.

Winn doubled in a run in the fifth and, before the Orioles recorded an out, St. Louis went ahead on Donovan’s two-run blast. It was Donovan’s fourth homer of the season.

Ivan Herrera’s double pushed the gap to 6-4 in the seventh.

The game’s start was delayed 30 minutes because of rain.
