Matt Chapman belted a two-run, walk-off home run with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday afternoon, lifting the San Francisco Giants to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Atlanta Braves.
After Braves starter Bryce Elder struck out a career-high 12 in eight innings, while allowing one run, Atlanta went to Pierce Johnson (1-3) for the ninth with a 2-1 lead.
A one-out single by Heliot Ramos set the stage for Chapman, who launched a 1-1 pitch into the left-field bleachers for his 12th home run of the season and the Giants’ second consecutive walk-off win.
Tyler Rogers (3-2) threw a scoreless top of the ninth for the Giants to earn the win as the Braves saw their losing streak reach six games.
The Giants scored first when Wilmer Flores led off the fourth with a home run off Elder, his 11th of the season.
Giants right-hander Logan Webb took a 1-0 lead and two-hit shutout into the fifth before leadoff hitter Michael Harris II launched his fourth homer of the year.
The Braves’ go-ahead run came in the sixth after Ronald Acuna Jr., Drake Baldwin and Austin Riley singled consecutively off Webb with no outs. Marcell Ozuna’s fielder’s choice ground ball allowed Acuna to score.
Webb struck out 10 over six innings, giving up two runs on six hits without a walk.
Elder reached eight full innings for just the second time in his career on the strength of the 12 strikeouts while throwing 107 pitches. He retired all 15 batters he faced after Flores’ homer.
Daniel Johnson had a double for the Giants, who played their fifth consecutive one-run game at home, a stretch in which they’ve gone 3-2 while winning the last three.
Riley collected a double and a single for the Braves, who had seven hits to the Giants’ five. The homer by Harris and double by Riley were the club’s only extra-base hits.
