David Peterson threw the first shutout of his career Wednesday night as the New York Mets clinched another series victory with a 5-0 win over the visiting Washington Nationals.

Peterson (5-2) allowed six hits, walked none and struck out six while throwing 106 pitches. He ran into trouble in the eighth, but center fielder Tyrone Taylor preserved the shutout by throwing out Luis Garcia Jr. trying to score on Jacob Young’s one-out single, then Peterson retired CJ Abrams on a flyout to right.

Peterson threw just nine pitches in a perfect ninth inning to close out the Mets’ first complete game and shutout since Aug. 17, 2024, when Luis Severino stymied the Miami Marlins in a 4-0 win.

After third baseman Brett Baty fielded the final out, a widely grinning Peterson embraced catcher Luis Torrens before exchanging hugs and high-fives with teammates.

The gem continued an ace-like season for Peterson, who lowered his ERA to 2.49. He has pitched at least seven innings in three of his last four starts and has surrendered more than two earned runs just twice in 13 starts this season.

Brandon Nimmo homered twice and Juan Soto went deep for the Mets, who have won five straight and 14 of their last 19 overall. New York is 5-0-1 in its last six series.

The Nationals fell to 2-7 this month. Washington has been blanked twice in June and scored two runs or fewer five other times.

The two-homer game was the second of the season for Nimmo and the eighth of his career. He also homered twice against the Nationals in a 19-5 win on Apr. 28, when he tied a team record with nine RBIs.

Pete Alonso opened the scoring with an RBI single in the first against Nationals starter Jake Irvin (5-3).

Soto hit a two-run homer in the third and finished 2-for-4. He is 4-for-8 with two homers and four RBIs in the first two games of the series and is batting .390 with five homers and 10 RBIS in his last 12 games.

Garcia and James Wood had two hits each for the Nationals.

Irvin gave up four runs on five hits and three walks while striking out four over five innings.
