Pinch hitter Ke’Bryan Hayes sparked a four-run 10th inning with a go-ahead RBI single and the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates salvaged a split of a doubleheader with an 8-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Thursday.

Hayes knocked in automatic runner Tommy Pham from second base. The Tigers challenged the safe call but it was upheld. Detroit manager A.J. Hinch was ejected arguing the decision.

Joey Bart drove in another run with a bases-loaded single off Brant Hurter (2-2), who was charged with four runs (three earned) on four hits and a walk in one inning. Isiah Kiner-Falefa knocked in two more with a two-out single.

Pittsburgh’s Jared Triolo hit a two-run homer and Nick Gonzales supplied a solo shot. David Bednar (2-5) picked up the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Pirates ace Paul Skenes gave up two runs and three hits while walking five and striking out nine in six innings.

Colt Keith ripped a two-run homer and Gleyber Torres hit a two-run double for Detroit.

Tigers reliever Keider Montero gave up one run and three hits in five innings.

Riley Greene drove in four runs and Tarik Skubal collected his eighth victory as the Tigers rolled to a 9-2 win in the first game.

The Tigers used Tyler Holton as an opener in the nightcap and the Pirates went deep twice in the second inning before he was removed. Gonzales mashed a cutter over the left field wall. After Adam Frazier singled, Triolo blasted a fastball over the center field fence for a 3-0 lead.

With one out in the third, McCutchen blasted a Montero slider over the left field wall to give Pittsburgh a four-run advantage.

Skenes got himself in trouble during the fifth by issuing one-out walks to Jake Rogers and Trey Sweeney. Keith hit into a fielder’s choice before Torres slapped a double to left-center, bringing home Rogers and Keith.

Isaac Mattson replaced Skenes and the Tigers tied it in the seventh. Sweeney had a one-out double and Keith bashed an 0-2 fastball to the opposite field for his first homer since May 8 to tie it at 4.

The game was delayed for 75 minutes with one out in the bottom of the ninth.
