River Plate moved to a tie atop the Group E standings Saturday after playing to a 0-0 draw against CF Monterrey in Pasadena, Calif., in the FIFA Club World Cup.

River Plate (1-0-1, 4 points) had multiple shots at taking the lead late in the match, including a corner in the 84th minute, but the Argentinian club could not convert. Things also go heated in extra time, with Monterrey (0-0-2, 2 points) picking up two yellows and River Plate’s Kevin Castano picking up his second yellow and being sent off in the 91st minute.

The Argentinian side was the aggressor throughout, finishing with more shots on goal (6-2), shot attempts (18-3) and corner kicks (9-2). The game also saw eight yellow cards, with Mexico’s Monterrey accumulating five.

The draw puts River Plate in a tie with Italian club Inter Milan, with the two clubs facing off in the final round of group play Wednesday in Seattle. Milan (1-0-1, 4 points) escaped with a 2-1 win over the Urawa Red Diamonds earlier Saturday, thanks to a Valentin Carboni goal in second-half stoppage time.

Urawa, of Tokyo, fell to 0-0-2 in the event.

Mexico’s Monterrey still has a chance to make the knockout round with a win Wednesday against Urawa if the Milan-River Plate match does not end in a draw.
