The Los Angeles Dodgers placed utility man Enrique Hernandez on the injured list due to left elbow inflammation among a host of roster moves Monday.
The Dodgers also optioned left-handed pitcher Justin Wrobleski, recalled outfielder James Outman and selected the contract of right-hander Julian Fernandez ahead of a three-game road series against the Milwaukee Brewers.
In order to add Fernandez to the 40-man roster, the Dodgers designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment. Alexander did not appear for the Dodgers after they claimed him off waivers from the New York Yankees last week.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts also revealed that right-hander Tyler Glasnow (shoulder inflammation) is ready to come off the 60-day IL and will start Wednesday at Milwaukee.
Hernandez, 33, played for the Dodgers on Friday and most of Saturday’s game before coming out in the eighth inning. He did not appear Sunday, when the Houston Astros completed a three-game sweep of Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.
The 12th-year veteran is hitting just .195 through 71 games this season, with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Hernandez has played first base, second base, third base, center field and left field this year as well as designated hitter.
Since last pitching in the major leagues in 2021, Fernandez has spent time in the minor leagues for three organizations, as well as pitching for Veracruz in Mexico last season.
The Dodgers signed the hard-throwing 29-year-old to a minor league contract in December and he has gone 3-0 with a 4.08 ERA in 24 appearances (two starts) for Triple-A Oklahoma City this season. He has 32 strikeouts in 28 2/3 innings.
As a member of the Colorado Rockies in 2021, Fernandez had a 10.80 ERA in six relief appearances, which are the only big-league outings of his career.
Outman, 28, has played in nine games for the Dodgers this season, batting .125 with two homers and four RBIs. He will play center field and bat ninth for Los Angeles against Milwaukee on Monday.
Wrobleski, 24, has made eight appearances (two starts) in his second MLB season for the Dodgers, most recently on Saturday. He is 4-3 with a 4.50 ERA this year.
The Dodgers are dealing with a number of injuries, but in a reversal from earlier in the season, they have more concerns on the position player side. Tommy Edman has a small fracture in a pinky toe but can continue to play, according to Roberts. Third baseman Max Muncy (knee) went on the injured list Thursday.
