Kentucky claims No. 1 spot, Duke No. 2

Kentucky is the new No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25 college basketball poll, released Monday.

The Wildcats (2-0), who began the season at No. 2, defeated previously top-ranked Michigan State and Eastern Kentucky in the season’s opening week to garner 64 of 65 first-place votes.

Kentucky hasn’t been No. 1 since the early weeks of the 2016-17 season.

Duke (2-0) climbed two spots to No. 2 after a two-point win over Kansas in the Champions Classic and a rout of Colorado State.

Michigan State (1-1) fell to No. 3, followed by Louisville (2-0), which claimed the other first-place vote. Kansas (1-1) dropped two spots to No. 5.

Rounding out the top 10 are North Carolina, Maryland, Gonzaga, Virginia and Villanova.

No. 20 Washington and No. 25 Colorado moved into the poll this week, replacing Purdue and VCU.
