CJ Abrams hit a walk-off single in the ninth inning as the Washington Nationals ended a six-game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the visiting Athletics on Wednesday night.

Robert Hassell III led off the inning against Michael Kelly (2-1) with a fly ball down the right field line. Colby Thomas made a diving effort and got his glove on it but couldn’t make the catch as Hassell ended the play with a double.

After Jacob Young struck out attempting to sacrifice, Abrams fell behind in the count 1-2 before lacing a single to left. The throw from Tyler Soderstrom was off line, and Hassell slid in with the winning run.

Riley Adams homered for the Nationals, who had allowed 70 runs while losing their previous six games.

Jose A. Ferrer (3-3) pitched a scoreless top of the ninth for the win.

Soderstrom homered for the Athletics, who lost for the third time in four games.

A’s starter Jeffrey Springs was perfect through five innings. He wound up allowing one run on one hit over six innings, striking out five without issuing a walk.

Washington’s Cade Cavalli, making his first major league appearance since his debut in August 2022, allowed three hits over 4 1/3 scoreless innings. The 26-year-old right-hander, in his return from Tommy John surgery, struck out six and walked one.

Shea Langeliers singled to give the A’s runners on first and third with two out in the third, but Cavalli struck out Nick Kurtz.

In the fourth, a throwing error by shortstop Abrams again gave the Athletics first and third with two outs, but Cavalli got Lawrence Butler to ground out.

Soderstrom hit the first pitch from Konnor Pilkington in the sixth inning for a homer to right-center, giving the A’s a 1-0 lead.

Adams broke up Springs’ perfect game when he led off the sixth with a home run down the left field line to make it 1-1.
