Jackson Herrington and Mason Howell will meet on Sunday in the final of the United States Amateur Golf Championships at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
Herrington, from Dickson, Tenn. defeated Niall Shiels Donegan of Scotland 1-up, while Howell, a native of Thomasville, Ga., eliminated Eric Lee of Fullerton, Calif. 3 and 2.
Herrington struggled out of the gate, going down by two after back-to-back bogeys on the first two holes. He would get one back with a birdie on the par-3 third hole, and took the lead with a birdie on the short par-4 seventh hole.
Herrington built a 2-hole lead, which he held through 15, but he bogeyed 16 and Donegan sunk a 4-foot birdie putt on 17 to square the match. Both players had makeable birdie putts on the finishing hole, but Donegan left his on the left edge, while the southpaw Herrington drained his curling 6-footer.
The match between Howell and Lee was square through 10 holes, but Howell birdied the 11th, while Lee missed the green with his approach shot and took a bogey. Howell went 2-up when Lee bogeyed the 14th hole and closed out the match with a birdie on 16.
The championship match gets underway at 10:15 a.m. local time on Sunday.
