Sun send three first-round picks to Mercury for Bonner

The Connecticut Sun acquired three-time All-Star forward DeWanna Bonner in a sign-and-trade deal with the Phoenix Mercury on Tuesday.

The Sun sent three first-round picks — Nos. 7 and 10 in the 2020 WNBA Draft, and one in 2021 — to Phoenix for Bonner, who signed a multi-year contract. Connecticut did not announce the terms of the contract, however.

The Sun had acquired the seventh overall selection on Monday in a trade that sent forward Morgan Tuck and the No. 11 pick to the Seattle Storm.

“I’m excited to play with this talented group and do whatever I can to help this organization hang its first championship banner,” Bonner said in a statement. “Nothing is more important to me than winning.”

Bonner, 32, averaged 17.2 points, 7.6 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season for the Mercury.

“We are ecstatic to add and welcome DeWanna Bonner and her family to the Sun,” Connecticut general manager and head coach Curt Miller said. “She is an established All-Star in our league and one of the most versatile players in our game. DB’s talent is undeniable but most impressive to me was the praise she had for our roster and her desire to join our nucleus as we chase our first championship.”

Bonner was selected to the All-Star Game in 2015, 2018 and 2019 and was a three-time WNBA Sixth Woman of the Year (2009-11) during her 10 seasons with Phoenix.

“We drafted DeWanna in 2009, and together we won championships in 2009 and 2014,” Mercury general manager Jim Pitman said in a statement. “We watched as she became a Sixth Woman of the Year, All-Star, All-WNBA player, and most importantly a mother.

“Ultimately, she has decided the next stage of her career does not include us and we wish her the best. She and her daughters, Cali and Demi, will always remain a part of the Mercury family.”
