Arizona State overwhelms Hawaii down the stretch to pull out win

Arizona State outscored Hawaii 26-11 over the last eight minutes of the game to pull out an 83-76 win over the Rainbow Warriors in Honolulu on Thursday night.

Maurice Odum had eight of his 15 points and Allen Mukeba scored all eight of his points in that last sequence for the Sun Devils (4-1).

After a 3-pointer by Aaron Hunkin-Claytor cut Arizona State’s lead to 74-72 with 2:33 left, Mukeba made a dunk off an offensive rebound by Anthony Johnson.

Isaac Johnson, who led Hawaii (4-2) with 23 points, responded with a dunk to cut the lead to 76-74 with 1:37 left. Anthony Johnson followed with two free throws for Arizona State.

After a missed 3-pointer by Dre Bullock, Odum nailed a jumper to put Arizona State ahead 80-74 with 37 seconds left. Hawaii’s Hunter Erickson then made two free throws with 25 seconds remaining and Odum made 1 of 2 foul shots with 17 seconds left to give Arizona State an 81-76 lead.

Erickson then missed a 3-pointer and Mukeba grabbed the rebound. Mukeba was fouled and his two free throws with eight seconds left sealed the win.

Hawaii’s Isaac Johnson made all nine of his free-throw attempts, extending his streak of made shots at the line to 24.

Bryce Ford led Arizona State with 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting, going 3 of 5 from 3-point range. Anthony Johnson added 16 points and Massamba Diop finished with 10 points and five rebounds.

After a Ford 3-pointer with 16:04 remaining tied the game at 47, Hawaii scored seven straight points.

The Rainbow Warriors’ lead increased to 58-50 with 10:57 remaining following two free throws by Erickson. Isaac Johnson made a 3-pointer as the shot clock expired with 7:56 left to give Hawaii a 65-57 lead.

Arizona State responded with a 10-0 run that included 3-pointers by Anthony Johnson and Ford. a layup by Mukeba and two free throws by Odum.

Hawaii, which trailed 67-65 with 5:30 left, was in a 1-for-10 stretch from the field at that point. A 3-pointer by Odum put Arizona State ahead 72-67 with 4:01 remaining.
