Boston College lights it up from 3 in win over Harvard

Fred Payne scored a game-high 17 points to help Boston College end a two-game losing streak by beating Harvard 73-60 on Wednesday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Boston College, which entered the game ranked last among ACC teams in scoring (70.1 points per game), field goal percentage (40.2%) and 3-point percentage (25.0%), made 12 of its 30 3-point attempts. Payne, Caleb Steger and Donald Hand Jr. each tossed in three 3-pointers during the win.

The Eagles (4-4) had a 24-8 advantage in bench scoring. Boden Kapke and Jayden Hastings each added 10 points for Boston College, which received nine points and seven rebounds from Hand and nine points from Steger.

Tey Barbour led Harvard (4-4) with 15 points and nine rebounds. Thomas Batties II added 13 points, and Chander Pigge and Robert Hinton each finished with 12. Hinton also grabbed nine rebounds.

Harvard shot 41.7% from the field (25-of-60) and missed 14 of its 19 3-point attempts. Pigge was 0 for 5 from 3-point territory.

The loss extended Harvard’s losing streak to three games.

Hastings capped an 11-0 run with a dunk that put the Eagles up 34-20 with 5:32 remaining in the first half, but Harvard responded with an 8-0 spurt. Boston College had a 38-30 lead at halftime.

Boston College made 6 of its 14 3-point attempts in the first 20 minutes.

Harvard trimmed its deficit to two points, 46-44, on a Hinton layup, but Boston College answered with a 9-0 run to take a 55-44 lead with 12:34 to play. The Eagles had their largest lead of the game after a Payne layup made it 68-48 with 6:56 left.

A 6-0 run pulled Harvard within 14 points with 4:52 to play, but the Eagles didn’t allow the Crimson to get closer than 13 points the rest of the way.
