Wyatt Johnston’s power-play goal guides Stars past Mammoth

Wyatt Johnston scored the eventual game-winner a 5-on-3 power play in the second period as the Dallas Stars topped the visiting Utah Mammoth 4-3 on Friday night.

Roope Hintz, Jamie Benn and Jason Robertson also scored for the Stars, who improved to 9-1-1 in its past 11 games. Miro Heiskanen and Mikko Rantanen each had two assists as Dallas improved to 4-0-1 in its past five contests.

Dallas improved to 4-1-0 all-time against Utah as Jake Oettinger made 27 saves to move to 11-4-2 on the season.

Logan Cooley, Kevin Rooney and Jack McBain were the goal-scorers for the Mammoth, who dropped to 1-5-2 in their past eight on the road.

John Marino had a pair of assists, and Vitek Vanecek stopped 24 shots.

Dallas scored goals 1:02 apart in the middle period to erase a 2-1 deficit.

Benn snapped a bouncing puck blocker-side past Vanecek to tie it at 8:16 of the period.

The Stars took their first lead of the night at 9:18 as Robertson put home his own rebound for his team-leading 15th.

Utah tied it 3-3 when McBain put in the rebound off Lawson Crouse’s shot at 16:14.

Johnston restored the Stars’ lead on a two-man advantage, snapping a cross-ice feed from Rantanen at 18:33 of the middle frame.

Utah opened the scoring 57 seconds into the first period as Cooley finished a give-and-go with Dylan Guenther.

Rooney doubled Utah’s lead at 12:17 of the opening frame, snapping a Marino pass glove-side past Oettinger for his first goal of the season.

Hintz got Dallas on the board on a power play at 17:38 of the first, redirecting a Rantanen shot past Vanecek.

Utah forward Barrett Hayton missed the contest due to illness and was replaced in the lineup by Rooney.

On Friday afternoon, the Mammoth announced that Clayton Keller’s father died unexpectedly a day earlier. Keller, the Utah captain, suited up against the Stars, registering five shots in 17:59 of ice time.
