Skyy Clark’s 30 points carry UCLA past Cal Poly

Skyy Clark scored a season-high 30 points and had his season best of six 3-pointers for the third time to help UCLA notch a 108-87 victory over Cal Poly on Friday night in nonconference play at Los Angeles.

Tyler Bilodeau added 24 points and eight rebounds for the Bruins, who scored 65 second-half points to break open a close game. Donovan Dent had 16 points, matched his season best of 11 assists and grabbed a career-best five steals and Jamar Brown scored 14 points for UCLA (9-3), which won its second straight game.

Trent Perry had 12 points and Eric Dailey Jr. registered 10 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Bruins, who shot 61.8% from the field in the second half to finish at 57.4% while topping 100 for the first time this season.

Cayden Ward recorded 21 points and seven rebounds and Peter Bandelj added 17 points for the Mustangs (5-8), who dropped their third straight contest. Hamad Mousa added 14 points and Kieran Elliott had 13.

Cal Poly shot 51% from the field and made 14 of 32 3-point attempts. The Mustangs held a 28-21 rebounding edge.

UCLA made 12 of 28 from behind the arc and committed just eight turnovers while forcing Cal Poly to have 24 miscues. The Bruins had a 33-12 advantage in points off turnovers.

The Bruins ripped off 15 straight points early in the second half to turn a two-point deficit into a 60-47 lead.

Clark’s trey made it 50-47 to put UCLA ahead to stay and Brown’s basket capped the spurt as UCLA moved up by 13 with 15:12 left in the game.

Cal Poly crept back within 74-68 on a 3-pointer by Bandelj with 9:52 remaining before the Bruins delivered the knockout punch with a 25-6 run.

Bilodeau scored five straight points and Clark made a trey to boost the lead to 93-72 with 5:44 remaining.

Perry and Clark hit consecutive 3-pointers to end the sustained charge and make it 99-74 with 4:25 left.

Perry’s three-point play pushed UCLA over 100 with 3:20 remaining and the lead topped out at 27.

Cal Poly shot 58.3% from the field in the first half, including 9 of 17 from 3-point range, while holding a 45-43 halftime lead.

The Mustangs used runs of 12-4 and 12-2 in the half while leading by as many as six points.

Clark scored 15 first-half points for UCLA.
