Miami surges past Wake Forest for 1st ACC road win in 24 months

Shelton Henderson converted a go-ahead putback with 26 seconds remaining in the second half to lift visiting Miami to an 81-77 victory over Wake Forest on Wednesday in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Tre Donaldson scored 21 points and Malik Reneau added 18 to help Miami (13-2, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) snap its 16-game road conference losing streak. The away win against an ACC foe was the Hurricanes’ first since a 73-61 victory over Notre Dame on Jan. 24, 2024.

Tru Washington scored 13 points and Ernest Udeh Jr. had 10 to go along with 13 rebounds to send Miami to its eighth straight win overall.

The Hurricanes benefited from a 42-20 advantage in points in the paint and 37-20 edge in rebounds, including 13-4 on the offensive glass.

Wake Forest’s Juke Harris scored 22 of his 28 points in the second half. He finished 9-of-15 from the floor, including 4-of-8 from 3-point range.

Nate Calmese scored 19 points and Myles Colvin added 13 for the Demon Deacons (10-6, 1-2), who have lost three of their last four games.

Miami won a challenge to gain possession of the ball with 44.3 seconds remaining in the second half. An unblocked Henderson cleaned up a rebound following Reneau’s missed 3-pointer to give the Hurricanes a 79-77 lead with 26 seconds left.

Wake Forest was forced to foul after Harris misfired on a pair of free throws. Donaldson made both of his attempts from the charity stripe to cap the scoring.

Harris sandwiched a dunk and a jumper around baskets by Sebastian Akins and Calmese to stake Wake Forest to a 70-65 lead with 6:08 remaining in the second half. Miami responded with 10 straight points before Harris made a turnaround jumper and a 3-pointer to level the contest.

Reneau drained a 3-pointer to give the Hurricanes a 30-26 lead with 6:08 remaining in the first half before the Demon Deacons responded with a 12-3 surge. Miami, however, scored the final six points of the half to take a 39-38 lead into intermission.
