Nets’ Michael Porter Jr. (hamstring) could be done for season

Michael Porter Jr.’s first season with the Brooklyn Nets might be over after the team announced Thursday that its leading scorer was diagnosed with a left hamstring strain.

Porter, 27, is averaging a career-high 24.2 points per game along with 7.1 rebounds while shooting 36.3% from 3-point range in 52 games (all starts). Porter, who will be re-evaluated in two to three weeks, shares the team rebounding lead with Nic Claxton.

For a Nets team with one of the league’s worst records, Porter will probably sit out the rest of the season rather than rush back for just a game or two.

Porter had missed the last three games due to a right ankle sprain before the hamstring injury occurred, leading to an MRI on Wednesday. Brooklyn is 3-17 without Porter.

Last offseason, the Nets acquired Porter and a 2032 first-round pick from the Denver Nuggets in exchange for Cam Johnson.

A first-round pick of the Nuggets in the 2018 NBA Draft, Porter averages 17.3 points, 6.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists over seven seasons with the Nuggets (2019-25) and Nets. He’s three games shy of 400 for his career, making 343 starts.
