Paul Goldschmidt hit a pair of home runs off Detroit ace Tarik Skubal and Jasson Dominguez blasted a go-ahead two-run shot as the New York Yankees downed the host Detroit Tigers, 4-2, on Wednesday evening.

Goldschmidt, the Yankees’ leadoff hitter, increased his season total to 14, four more than he had all of last season. Dominguez’s homer was just his third of the season.

Yankees starter Ryan Weathers (3-5) allowed two runs, one earned, and six hits in six innings. He walked two and struck out six. Fernando Cruz struck out four batters in 1 1/3 innings. David Bednar pitched the ninth for his 16th save.

Skubal (3-3) allowed only one other hit besides the homers and struck out nine without a walk in six innings. Spencer Torkelson scored both Tigers runs.

Goldschmidt gave New York the lead moments into the contest when he jumped on a Skubal fastball and sent it over the left field wall. The Tigers tied the score in the second inning.

Torkelson smacked a double and Hao-Yu Lee walked. With two down, Zach McKinstry lifted a single to center to score Torkelson.

New York regained the lead in the next inning as Goldschmidt smoked a changeup 427 feet over the left-center field wall.

Detroit evened the score at 2 in the fourth. Torkelson walked and Lee singled to right. An error by Dominguez allowed both runners to move up before Ben Malgeri, playing in his second major league game, hit a sacrifice fly to score Torkelson.

Lee advanced to third on the out but was left stranded as McKinstry struck out and Jake Rogers flied out.

Skubal struck out the first two batters he faced in the sixth, including Goldschmidt. A single by Ben Rice brought Dominguez to the plate. Dominguez took advantage of a hanging changeup and pulled it over the left-field wall to give his club a two-run advantage.

Riley Greene led off the eighth with a single but Cruz proceeded to fan the next three batters.
