Seiya Suzuki had three hits with two RBIs and Colin Rea tossed six strong innings for his team-high eighth victory as the visiting Chicago Cubs beat the St. Louis Cardinals 10-2 on Tuesday.
Ian Happ had two hits and drove in two runs for the Cubs, who pounded out 17 hits and won for the fourth time in their last five games. Pedro Ramirez added three hits and an RBI, Alex Bregman had three hits and Nico Hoerner had two RBIs.
Chicago has recorded at least 12 hits in each of the last four games and has scored a total of 35 runs over that stretch.
Rea (8-7) allowed one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Masyn Winn doubled in a run in the ninth inning for St. Louis, which fell under .500 for the first time this season at 53-54. The Cardinals have lost nine of their 12 games coming out of the All-Star break.
With two outs in the first inning, Chicago set the tone on Happ’s two-run double against Michael McGreevy (4-9).
The Cubs drove McGreevy from the game with five more runs on five hits in the second inning. Michael Conforto hit a leadoff single, Carson Kelly walked and both advanced on Ramirez’s groundout.
Conforto scored on Pete Crow-Armstrong’s sacrifice fly before the Cubs added a pair of runs on Suzuki’s double and Michael Busch’s single. With the bases loaded and two outs, Hoerner delivered a two-run single to put Chicago ahead 7-0.
Gordon Graceffo replaced McGreevy and stranded runners at the corners when Conforto flied out.
McGreevy allowed seven runs on eight hits over 1 2/3 innings in the shortest outing of his career. He walked two and struck out two.
St. Louis loaded the bases with one out in the fourth inning and got on the board on Nathan Church’s sacrifice fly.
The Cubs extended their lead in the fifth inning when Hoerner worked a leadoff walk, stole second base and then moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on Ramirez’s infield single.
Suzuki tacked on an RBI single in the eighth and Kelly closed out the Cubs’ scoring with an RBI single in the ninth.
