Gerrit Cole pitched six shutout innings and Max Schuemann delivered a two-run double to lift the visiting New York Yankees to a 3-2 victory against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday.

Jasson Dominguez had a pair of hits for New York, which won for the fifth time in six games while sending American League Central-leading Chicago to its fourth defeat in the past five contests.

Yankees relievers Angel Chivilli and Brent Headrick each followed Cole with a scoreless inning to give way to closer David Bednar, who allowed a two-run home run to Chase Meidroth with two outs in the ninth.

Bednar recovered to strike out pinch hitter Everson Pereira to end the game and secure his 22nd save.

Braden Montgomery had two hits for the White Sox.

Cole (4-5) secured his fourth consecutive quality start. The right-hander surrendered four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

After striking out the side in order to begin the game, White Sox left-hander Anthony Kay allowed hits to four of the first five Yankees batters in the second inning while throwing a wild pitch.

Anthony Volpe doubled home New York’s first run before Schuemann chopped a two-run double over the head of Chicago third baseman Miguel Vargas and down the left-field line.

One night after rallying from a 3-0 first-inning deficit, New York preserved its own early three-run advantage to secure at least a split of the four-game series.

Munetaka Murakami opened the White Sox fourth with a double, the club’s only extra-base hit against Cole.

Chicago made Cole throw 32 pitches in the inning and loaded the bases with two outs but was unable to score when Cole induced Tristan Peters to fly out to shallow left field to end the threat.

Kay (7-5) scattered three runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He walked one and struck out seven.

Paced by Tyler Schweitzer’s three innings of one-hit work, the Chicago bullpen delivered 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

The Yankees improved to 4-1 against the White Sox this season.
