Middle of order powers Phillies past Marlins for 5th straight win

Alec Bohm and Bryson Stott each drove in two runs to guide the Philadelphia Phillies to a 6-4 victory over the visiting Miami Marlins on Tuesday.

Philadelphia won its fifth straight game despite a subpar outing from Zack Wheeler, who walked four in five innings while allowing two runs and two hits with seven strikeouts. Luis Arraez (three hits) and Justin Crawford (two hits, RBI) also made key contributions for the Phillies.

Griffin Conine had two hits, including a homer, and scored twice for Miami. The Marlins, who used six pitchers in a planned bullpen game, have dropped four of their last six contests.

Wheeler retired Miami in order in the first inning, setting the stage for his teammates to jump ahead 1-0 in the bottom half. Bryce Harper started the rally with a two-out walk and then advanced on a hit by Arraez before scoring on Bohm’s single to left.

Conine belted a solo homer in the second, knotting the score at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until the fifth, when Xavier Edwards’ RBI single made Wheeler pay for a pair of two-out walks.

Another walk — this one by reliever Alex McFarlane (1-1) — came back to bite the Phillies in the sixth. Otto Lopez opened the inning with a free pass, moved to second on a single by Conine and scored on a throwing error by Arraez.

However, Philadelphia promptly rallied in the bottom half against Michael Petersen (2-3). With runners on first and second and one out, Bohm’s double to left drew the Phillies within 3-2. The next hitter was Stott, who singled up the middle to put the hosts in front 4-3.

Three batters later, Tyler Phillips was on the mound when Crawford delivered an RBI single to make it 5-3.

Phillies left-hander Jose Alvarado got out of the seventh inning thanks to a nifty double play in which Bohm caught a line drive and stepped on first base in one motion.

Both teams scored a run in the eighth before Brooks Raley logged a perfect ninth for his first save as a Phillie. Stott, who moved to third base earlier this month, made two diving stops in the frame, including one to close out the game.
