Lars Nootbaar hit the first pitch of the game for a home run, Corbin Carroll and Tim Tawa homered in a five-run third inning, and the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks overpowered the San Francisco Giants 10-6 on Friday.

Nootbaar collected three hits for the Diamondbacks, who took advantage of a San Diego Padres loss earlier in the evening to move within a half-game of the National League’s third and final wild-card spot.

Bryce Eldridge and Christian Koss launched homers for the Giants — the first of the season for Koss — but the hosts were out-hit 12-5 en route to their ninth loss in 11 meetings with the Diamondbacks this season.

The homers by Nootbaar, his fifth, Carroll, his 19th, and Tawa, his ninth, helped Arizona overcome Giants scoring in each of the first four innings.

The Diamondbacks held a 6-5 lead entering the sixth inning, when they took charge with a three-run uprising featuring a two-RBI single by Ildemaro Vargas and Carroll’s sacrifice fly for his third RBI of the night.

Arizona relievers Gerardo Carrillo, Jonathan Loaisiga, Brandyn Garcia, Dennis Santana and Juan Morillo combined for five innings, permitting just one run, which was unearned, and one hit.

Left-hander Kohl Drake, promoted from the minors earlier in the day, was pulled after four innings, having allowed four hits and five runs. He walked one and struck out four.

Carrillo (3-1), who pitched a scoreless fifth inning to retain a one-run lead, was credited with the win.

Giants starter Blade Tidwell (0-1) went five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits. He struck out four and walked one.

The homer by Tawa, a three-run shot, came two pitches after Giants manager Tony Vitello was ejected for disputing Nolan Arenado’s grounder over third base having been ruled fair. Arenado’s double put runners on second and third in what then was a 3-2 game.

Vitello was tossed for the second time in three days. Giants ace Logan Webb, watching from the dugout, also was ejected.

Tawa, Arenado and James McCann had two hits apiece for Arizona, which earned a third win in four games.

The homer by Eldridge was his 15th of the season. He finished with two hits and Jung Hoo Lee scored twice for the Giants, who had won three of four to open a seven-game homestand.
