When No. 20 Duke plays its first game in 17 days on Saturday, it will do so without coach Mike Krzyzewski.
The Basketball Hall of Famer did not make the road trip for the contest against No. 18 Florida State due to COVID-19 contact tracing. The school announced that Krzyzewski “will observe standard quarantine protocol after being exposed to an individual not in the travel party who tested positive for COVID-19.” Associate head coach Jon Scheyer will guide the team in Krzyzewski’s absence.
The Blue Devils (3-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) haven’t played since Dec. 16, when they opened league play with a 75-65 win at Notre Dame. Duke subsequently canceled its remaining nonconference schedule due to COVID-19 concerns, then had its scheduled Tuesday game at Pitt postponed due to COVID-19 issues in the Panthers’ program.
The Seminoles (5-2, 1-1) are coming off a 77-67 loss at Clemson on Tuesday.
Krzyzewski, 73, is in his 41st season at Duke, where he owns a 1,087-293 record. His teams have reached the Final Four 12 times, and he guided the Blue Devils to national championships in 1991, 1992, 2001, 2010, 2015.
Including his time as head coach at Army (1975-76 to 1979-80), Krzyzewski has a career 1,160-352 record, the most victories in men’s Division I basketball history. –Field Level Media (@FieldLevelMedia)
