FC Cincinnati waived decorated defender Matt Miazga and bought out his guaranteed contract.
The team announced Monday night that the 31-year-old center back will no longer occupy a roster slot or count against the 2026 salary budget, retroactive to Sept. 2.
Miazga was the MLS Defender of the Year and made the league’s Best XI and All-Star teams in 2023.
“Everyone at the club is tremendously grateful for all that Matt did for FC Cincinnati,” general manager Chris Albright said. “Matt brought to Cincinnati a winning mentality that helped turn around the trajectory of this team. He was a foundational piece in the growth of our club, and we wish him and his family the best.”
Acquired from Premier League side Chelsea in August 2022, Miazga recorded three goals and eight assists in 122 career MLS games (114 starts) with the New York Red Bulls (2013-15) and Cincinnati. His teams captured MLS Supporters’ Shields in 2013, 2015 and 2023.
