The Ecuadorian Football Federation announced that Marcelo Gallardo has been hired to coach its men’s national team through the 2030 World Cup.
Gallardo, 50, replaces Sebastian Beccacece, who led Ecuador to the Round of 32 in this summer’s World Cup, where “La Tri” were eliminated 2-0 by Mexico. Ecuador advanced from the group stage by upsetting Germany.
Gallardo departed Argentina’s River Plate in February following a second stint with the club he has led to 14 trophies, including a pair of Copa Libertadores wins. This is his first appointment to manage a national team.
“We sought out Marcello Gallardo for what he has won, but above all for what he represents,” Ecuadorian Football Federation president Francisco Egas said in a statement. “We have a generation that competes at the highest leve.
“We have talent, structure and ambition, and we believe this national team is ready to take the next step.”
Ecuador is next scheduled to play against South Korea on Sept. 24.
