Lebanese F Youssef Khayat commits to Michigan

Youssef Khayat, a forward from Lebanon playing in France, committed to Michigan on Sunday.

He also had been considering DePaul, Xavier and Wake Forest but said he chose the Wolverines because he “felt at home with the coaching staff.”

“Coach Juwan (Howard) told me my role, how I can play and impact the team this season,” he said during his live announcement on the Field of 68.

Khayat, 19, is 6-foot-8. He led the Limoges Under-21 team in scoring (17.4 points) and rebounding (7.7) last season and shot 37 percent from 3-point range.

Born in Beirut, he has been playing professionally in France since age 14.

“They have experience with international players like Moe Wagner and Moussa Diabate,” he told 247sports.com recently. “I think them having experience with international players is very impressive. The name Michigan is so important in the USA so that paired with their experience with international players plus being a well-known program is kind of unique.”

He said he will be relocating to Ann Arbor soon after getting his visa.

He will be eligible to play in 2022-23 for Michigan, which lost four of its five starters from last season. The Wolverines added two graduate transfers in Duke forward Joey Baker and Princeton point guard Jaelin Llewellyn.
