Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton power Yankees to sweep of A’s

Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton homered in the same game for the ninth time this season and the New York Yankees completed a sweep of the visiting Oakland Athletics with a 5-3 victory on Wednesday afternoon.

The Yankees won their fourth straight since being no-hit by the Houston Astros on Saturday and completed their ninth series sweep this season. New York also won for the 23rd time in 28 games and improved to 19-2 in its past 21 home games.

Judge and Stanton helped the Yankees erase an early 3-0 deficit and record the team’s MLB-best 24th comeback win by connecting against Oakland starter Cole Irvin (2-6).

Judge hit his majors-best 29th homer two batters into the home half of the first when he lifted a full-count sinker to left field. After Judge’s 429-foot drive, Stanton hit his 19th homer with two outs in the third when he sent Irvin’s 2-2 changeup into the right-field seats.

The Yankees improved to 9-0 this season when Judge and Stanton homer in the same game. The most recent instance prior to Wednesday was Sunday’s game, during which Stanton ended Jose Urquidy’s no-hit bid in the seventh inning and Judge hit a three-run game-ending homer in the 10th.

It also was the 23rd regular-season game the duo homered in the same contest, and the Yankees are 22-1 in those games.

New York’s Jameson Taillon (9-1) survived a rocky start and allowed three runs on seven hits in five innings for his ninth straight win.

Taillon struck out six and walked two to join Tony Gonsolin of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Houston’s Justin Verlander and Toronto’s Alek Manoah as the fourth pitcher to reach nine wins. Verlander, however, picked up his 10th win on Wednesday in the Astros’ 2-0 victory over the New York Mets.

Lucas Luetge followed Taillon with two scoreless innings and Miguel Castro worked around two singles in a scoreless eighth. Clay Holmes got three groundouts in a 1-2-3 ninth for his 14th save in 15 chances.

Oakland dropped to 5-20 this month and did all of its scoring in the opening inning as it was swept for the eighth time this year.

Stephen Piscotty hit a two-run double and scored on a single by Elvis Andrus, who drove in five of Oakland’s nine runs in the series.

Irvin allowed five runs and six hits in seven innings. He struck out five, walked one and dropped his career-high fifth straight decision.
