RB Aaron Jones favored to sign with Dolphins

Aaron Jones

The Green Bay Packers are expected to lose running back Aaron Jones in free agency after electing not to place the franchise tag on him this week.

Jones, 26, rushed for 1,104 yards and nine touchdowns in 14 games last season. He has 3,364 yards and 37 touchdowns on 651 carries through his first four NFL season.

That is expected to make him a very attractive option for an emerging team such as the Miami Dolphins, who are being offered at +300 to sign Jones by PointsBet. Myles Gaskin led the Dolphins with 584 rushing yards last season, followed by Salvon Ahmed (319) and Matt Breida (254).

Miami finished 22nd in the NFL in rushing offense last season. Gaskin added 388 yards on 41 catches while Ahmed produced the Dolphins’ only 100-yard game.

Jones, who also had 47 catches for 355 yards and two touchdowns last season, would add a premier all-around player to the Dolphins’ offense.

The San Francisco 49ers have the second-shortest odds at +400 to sign Jones. The 49ers finished 15th in rushing last season despite suffering through a slew of injuries.

Raheem Mostert was limited to 521 rushing yards in eight games, while Jeff Wilson Jr. led the team with 600 rushing yards and 10 total touchdowns. Oft-injured Jerick McKinnon and Tevin Coleman are not expected to return as free agents.

Packers Want Aaron Jones – At Their Price

The Packers are being offered at +500 to re-sign Jones.

They want him back for less than $10 million annually, according to a report by ProFootballTalk.com. However, that would place Jones well behind the deals signed by the likes of Carolina’s Christian McCaffrey ($16 million annually), Dallas’ Ezekiel Elliott and New Orleans’ Alvin Kamara at $15 million per year, and others including Minnesota’s Dalvin Cook, Tennessee’s Derrick Henry and Cincinnati’s Joe Mixon, who are each in the $12 million to $13 million range.

The other contributing factor is that Green Bay drafted A.J. Dillon in the second round last year.

The Arizona Cardinals, New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers are also each being offered at +500 to sign Jones.

Several Teams In Need Of Featured Back

The Cardinals could lose Kenyan Drake in free agency, while the Steelers are not expected to re-sign James Conner. The Jets finished last year with mid-round pick La’Mical Perine as their featured back after Le’Veon Bell was released.

The next-shortest odds by PointsBet belong to the Seattle Seahawks at +800. With Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde pending free agents, the Seahawks running backs under contract include Rashaad Penny, DeeJay Dallas and Travis Homer.

PointsBet is also offering odds on the Chicago Bears (+1100) and Atlanta Falcons (+1800).
