Best Bets for Safeway Open

The first two events of the 2019-20 PGA Tour season have resulted in two first-time Tour winners in Juaquin Niemann and Sebastian Munoz.

The Tour now turns its attention to California, with the Safeway Open featuring arguably the strongest field in event history. With four of the world’s top 11-ranked players teeing it up in Napa, it will be more difficult for the youth movement to continue its impressive run of winning success.

No. 6 Justin Thomas is the top-ranked player in the field, and he’s the betting favorite at +650 by PointsBet for good reason. He won the second leg of the FedEx Cup Playoffs last month and has more than enough power to handle a Silverado Resort North course that runs more than 7,100 yards.

Other good bets to consider:
  • No. 7 Patrick Cantlay (+1000) also finished with a strong run during the FedEx Cup Playoffs, while Francesco Molinari (+2800) tied for 14th at last week’s BMW PGA Championship.
  • Sungjae Im (+2000) was denied his first Tour win in dramatic fashion last week, but he continues to knock on the door and is in strong form as he has climbed to No. 47 with four consecutive top-20s.
  • Few players have been more consistent than Hideki Matsuyama (+1400), who has seven top-10s against only two missed cuts in 2019.
  • Pat Perez has fallen off the radar since suffering a calf injury last spring and never really regaining his form. He enters the week ranked No. 175, but is a former top 15 player who could be sneaky dangerous as a 200-1 longshot. Perez had a pair of top 10 finishes late last year and has four career Tour victories.
  • Brendan Steele (+8000) brings longshot odds, as he has plummeted to No. 281 but has a strong history at the event that includes back-to-back wins in 2016 and 2017.
  • For those who are curious, former Dallas Cowboys QB and current CBS Sports analyst Tony Romo is a 5,000-1 longshot. He has missed the cut in each of his three previous starts on the PGA Tour.
