Betting sites offer free play on HORSE tourney

Betting on horses is nothing new, but gamblers now have an opportunity to wager on HORSE.

PlaySugarHouse.com in New Jersey and BetRivers.com in Pennsylvania are offering players the chance to fill out a free bracket for the upcoming NBA HORSE Challenge.

Helping to fill the sports void amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the trick-shot competition pits eight current and former stars from the NBA and WNBA in a single-elimination tournament. Players will be competing from their own homes in compliance with social distancing guidelines.

The opening round features Atlanta Hawks point guard Trae Young against former NBA champ Chauncey Billups, with the winner of that clash facing either WNBA legend Tamika Catchings or Utah Jazz guard Mike Conley. On the other side of the bracket, Chicago Bulls guard Zach LaVine takes on Boston Celtics great Paul Pierce, and Oklahoma City star Chris Paul faces Allie Quigley of the WNBA’s Chicago Sky.

From Saturday morning until 7 p.m. ET on Sunday evening, players can fill out a free bracket in order to compete for a $1,000 pool on each website.

Players earn one point for each correct pick in the first round, two points for each correct pick in the semifinals, and three points for choosing the correct winner.

“We are happy to offer our NBA bettors an alternative while the season is suspended,” said Mattias Stetz, chief operating officer of Rush Street Interactive, which operates both sites. “The NBA has been very creative with this HORSE Challenge and we think our bracket will add some additional excitement for our bettors.”

The quarterfinals will air on ESPN on Sunday from 7-9 p.m. ET. The semifinals and championship game will be aired on ESPN (and streamed on the ESPN app) on April 16 at 9 p.m. ET.
