Luis Perez completed 18 of 26 passes for 150 yards and a touchdown and Matt McCrane kicked a tiebreaking 47-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to lead the New York Guardians to a 17-14 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats on Saturday.
McCrane also kicked two other field goals — from 51 yards to open the scoring in the first quarter and a 23-yarder in the second quarter to tie the score at 6-6 — for the Guardians (2-2).
Perez’s 3-yard pass to Mekale McKay with 1:32 remaining before halftime broke the tie, and quarterback Marquise Williams’ two-point conversion run gave the Guardians a 14-6 lead.
Wildcats quarterback Josh Johnson connected with Saeed Blacknall for a 42-yard score with 4:45 left in the second quarter as Los Angeles (2-2) tied it at 14-14 on a pass to Jordan Smallwood for a two-point conversion. Johnson completed 25 of 40 attempts for 330 yards and two scores but also threw one interception.
Johnson’s favorite target on Saturday — Tre McBride — made eight catches for 127 yards, including a 4-yarder for a touchdown with seven seconds left in the first quarter.
