Reports: Panthers QB Newton dealing with Lisfranc injury, surgery possible

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is dealing with a Lisfranc injury and could require surgery, according to multiple reports Tuesday.

Newton is hoping rest and rehab will keep him out of the operating room for a second time in 2019. He had shoulder surgery in January.

Newton was forced to the sideline after an 0-2 start during which he struggled with accuracy and did not attempt to run often. The injury by definition is displacement of the metatarsal bones, which often requires surgery and a lengthy recover process that includes a hard cast for up to two months.

NFL Network, seconding a report from Joseph Person in Charlotte, reported Tuesday that Kyle Allen is likely to be the starter for several weeks as Newton’s next course of action is determined.

Newton was diagnosed with a mid-foot sprain during the third preseason game in August at New England. He was questionable for Week 1 but was able to practice three consecutive days and removed from the injury report.

Allen threw four touchdown passes and guided the Panthers to their first win of the 2019 season on Sunday at Arizona.

Newton has two years remaining on his contract. The 30-year-old is owed more than $21 million, including a $2 million option, for the 2020 season.

In instances when a Lisfranc fracture or subluxation — the medical term for dislocation — of the joints is present or ligaments are torn, surgery is the only option to fully realign joints and return any bone fragment to its rightful position.
