Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is “doing even better than expected” after surgery on his right ankle, coach Nick Saban said on the SEC Network on Saturday.
Tagovailoa underwent surgery Sunday after suffering a high ankle sprain a day earlier against Tennessee.
“He’s absolutely doing even better than expected,” Saban said during the “SEC Nation” show. “Didn’t have a lot of swelling this time around, so that sort of accentuates the ability to rehab. He’s doing well.”
Saban said Monday that there is “no real timetable” for Tagovailoa’s return, although the top-ranked Crimson Tide is pointing toward a Nov. 9 home game against LSU. Alabama, after hosting Arkansas on Saturday, is off next week before the big SEC showdown against the Tigers.
The Heisman Trophy-contending Tagovailoa had an identical “tightrope” surgery on his other ankle last December and returned for the College Football Playoff, missing a total of 13 days.
The junior has completed 74.7 percent of his passes for 2,166 yards with 27 touchdowns and just two interceptions in seven games this season.
