Tiger Woods did not learn about Kobe Bryant’s death in a helicopter accident until shortly after walking off the course at the Farmers Insurance Open in San Diego on Sunday.
A lifelong Lakers fan, Woods was asked about his reaction upon hearing the news.
“It’s a shocker to everyone,” Woods told CBS Sports. “Unbelievably said. One of the more tragic days that … well, for me, reality is just setting in because I was just told about five minutes ago.”
Woods and Bryant knew each other well, and Woods said he and caddie Joe LaCava would often talk about Bryant on the course.
“The fire,” Woods told CBS when asked what he will remember most about Bryant. “He burned so competitively hot. And the desire to win. He brought it each and every night, on both ends of the floor. Not too many guys can say that throughout NBA history.”
