China’s Bu Yunchaokete converted just three of 17 break points, but it was enough to claim a 6-7 (2), 6-3, 7-6 (4) victory over Taiwan’s Chun-Hsin Tseng in Winston-Salem Open first-round action on Sunday.
Yunchaokete’s reward? A second-round matchup with top-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece on Tuesday.
Mackenzie McDonald racked up 28 of his 58 winners in the third set to earn a 6-4, 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2) victory over Brandon Holt in a match that lasted two hours, 32 minutes.
The Netherlands’ Botic van de Zandschulp shrugged off a first-set loss for a 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Australia’s Adam Walton. Vit Kopriva of the Czech Republic pulled off a similar rally as he defeated Austria’s Sebastian Ofner 3-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Serbia’s Hamad Medjedovic and France’s Arthur Rinderknech hooked up for an extended second-set tiebreaker before Medjedovic prevailed 6-3, 7-6 (9). Spain’s Pablo Carreno Busta breezed to a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka. The 34-year-old Carreno Busta converted four of seven break points and never allowed Nishioka a break point.
Spain’s Pedro Martinez and Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak also claimed straight-set wins. Martinez downed Belgium’s David Goffin 6-3, 6-3, while Majchrzak took out Chile’s Nicolas Jarry 7-6 (6), 6-4.
