With a 3-1 victory over Croatia on Sunday in Halle, host Germany punched its second straight ticket to the Davis Cup Final 8.
Fresh off his U.S. Open victory, Alexander Zverev led the way, following up his 6-4, 7-6 (3) victory over Matej Dodig on Saturday with a series-clinching 6-2, 6-4 triumph over Dino Prizmic on Sunday.
Zverev took just 77 minutes to top Prizmic, who failed to register a single break point.
Doubles team Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz also won on Sunday, taking down Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic 7-5, 6-2. Prizmic had topped Daniel Altmaier 6-4, 6-3 on Saturday for Croatia’s lone victory.
Germany moves on to the quarterfinals of the 114th edition of the Davis Cup, while Croatia was eliminated.
Davis Cup series were contested worldwide over the weekend to determine the seven teams that will join defending champion Italy in the final stage at Bologna, Italy, from Nov. 24-29.
Canada, Austria, South Korea and the Czech Republic advanced after Round 2 wins on Saturday, while Spain and Great Britain completed sweeps of their series on Sunday.
Spain 4, Chile 0
Carlos Alcaraz did not compete for his country in Round 2, but he wasn’t needed. Spain posted two victories in Santiago on Saturday and clinched their spot in the Final 8 on Sunday with the doubles team of Pedro Martinez and Jaume Munar earning a 6-0, 6-3 victory over Chile’s Tomas Barrios Vera and Alejandro Tabilo. Spain’s Martin Landaluce was also a winner, topping Matias Soto 6-2, 6-3.
Great Britain 4, Ecuador 0
After victories in both singles matches in London on Saturday, Great Britain closed out Ecuador with a straight-set victory from their doubles team as Henry Patten and Neal Skupski beat Gonzalo Escobar and Diego Hidalgo 6-3, 6-4 in 84 minutes. Harry Wendelken defeated Angel Veliz 6-2, 6-3 in the final match between the countries.
