Jeremy Chardy retires after first-round loss at Wimbledon

Frenchman Jeremy Chardy has called it a career after losing to World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz in a first-round match on Tuesday at Wimbledon.

Chardy, 36, walks away with $10.779 million in career earnings. He won one singles tournament in his 18-year career (Stuttgart 2009) and reached as high as No. 25 in the rankings in 2013. He won seven doubles titles.

Chardy is currently ranked No. 542.

Alcaraz defeated Chardy 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in just under two hours Tuesday. Alcaraz congratulated Chardy on his career in a Twitter post.

Chardy, playing in his 14th Wimbledon, received a standing ovation from the crowd at the All England Club after winning his first game against Alcaraz in the second set.
