Public flips Carlos Alcaraz to Wimbledon favorite over Jannik Sinner

Jannik Sinner opened as a slight favorite to beat Carlos Alcaraz in Sunday’s highly anticipated men’s final at Wimbledon, but that has shifted with the public siding with the young Spaniard.

Sinner was the -115 favorite when BetMGM opened the market once the final matchup was determined. However, he had flipped to the +100 underdog by Saturday with the public supporting Alcaraz with 57 percent of the total bets and 67 percent of the money wagered while shifting from -105 to -118.

Alcaraz, 22, is seeking his third consecutive Wimbledon title after dispatching Taylor Fritz in four sets on Friday. Sinner then took the court and swept through 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic to set up the final against Alcaraz.

Alcaraz owns an 8-4 head-to-head lead against the 23-year-old Sinner. It will be a rematch of an epic French Open final in June in which Alcaraz won a five-set marathon that lasted five hours, 29 minutes, the longest Roland Garros final ever.

“I’m pretty sure he’s going to take a lot of things from the French Open final, that he’s going to be better,” Alcaraz said.

“He’s going to be better physically. He’s going to be better mentally. He’s going to be prepared on Sunday to give his 100 percent. I’m not thinking I have an advantage mentally Sunday because of that match.”

Alcaraz enters Sunday’s final scheduled for 11 a.m. ET with a career-best 24-match winning streak and is 33-1 in his past 34 matches.

“I’m not thinking about the winning streak or the results at all. This is my dream, stepping on these beautiful courts and playing tennis in the most beautiful tournaments in the world,” Alcaraz said. “That’s all I try to think at every tournament and why I try to bring the joy to the courts.”

Alcaraz is trying to become the fifth man in the Open Era to win at least three straight Wimbledon titles, joining Djokovic, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Bjorn Borg.

Sinner was four games away from potentially losing to Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round when Dimitrov was forced to retired. However, he has not dropped a set in any other match during the tournament.

“It’s a huge honor for me once again to share the court with Carlos,” Sinner said. “We try to push ourselves to the limit. He’s one of the players I look up to. I love watching him.”
