Stan Wawrinka survived a three-hour, 18-minute clash with Arthur Rinderknech to help Switzerland sweep France on Saturday at the United Cup in Australia.
Wawrinka, who announced he will retire at the end of the 2026 ATP Tour season, won 5-7, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5). His teammate, Belinda Bencic, defeated Leolia Jeanjean 6-2, 6-4 to put the Swiss atop Group C, which is playing in Perth. Bencic later teamed with Jakub Paul in mixed doubles to complete a 3-0 sweep.
For the United States, Coco Gauff defeated Solana Sierra of Argentina 6-1, 6-1 in 57 minutes in Group A in Perth. Her win followed an upset of Taylor Fritz, who has been battling tendinitis and was beaten 4-6, 7-5, 6-4 by Sebastian Baez. The mixed-doubles match between Gauff and Christian Harrison against Maria Lourdes-Carle and Guido Andreozzi was the decider, with the Americans winning 6-4, 6-1.
In Group D play in Sydney, Australia’s doubles team of Storm Hunter and John-Patrick Smith defeated the Norwegian pair of Viktor Durasovic and Ulrikke Eikeri 4-6, 6-1, 10-4 to seal a 2-1 victory. In singles action, Hunter defeated Malene Helgo 6-2, 7-6 (3), and Casper Ruud defeated Australia’s No. 1 player, Alex de Minaur, 6-3, 6-3.
China, playing in Group B in Sydney, took a 2-1 victory over Belgium. China’s Zhizhen Zhang defeated Zizou Bergs 6-7 (2), 7-6 (3), 7-5, while Belgium’s Elise Mertens swept Lin Zhu 6-2, 6-2. Zhang and Zhu then topped Bergs and Mertens 5-7, 7-6 (5), 10-6 in doubles.
On Sunday, eight teams will be in action: Canada vs. China (Group B in Sydney), Germany vs. Netherlands (Group F in Sydney), Italy vs. Switzerland (Group C in Perth) and Great Britain vs. Japan (Group E in Perth).
