Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith strengthened their positions for Olympic qualifying with their win at the Zurich Classic, and the Australian duo confirmed they’d each jump at the chance to compete in Tokyo this summer.
“I’m all in,” Leishman said when asked about Tokyo.
“Me, too,” said Smith.
Both are in good position to earn spots with fellow Australian Adam Scott announcing last week that he is passing on the Olympics for a second time to spend time with his family.
The Olympic field will be comprised of 60 players, with the top 15 in the world rankings guaranteed spots so long as there are no more than four players from a single country.
After that, the field is determined by world rankings, with no more than two allowed per country that does not already have two or more among the top 15.
Smith is currently the highest-ranked Australian at No. 25 and is in strong position to qualify. Scott is next at No. 36, immediately followed by Leishman, so Scott’s decision could result in Leishman making the field.
Cameron Smith: ‘I’m 100 percent’ On Olympics
It would be the first Olympic experience for Smith or Leishman, neither of whom qualified five years ago when Justin Rose claimed gold in golf’s return to the Games.
“Any chance I can get to put on the green and gold or a team shirt I’m all in,” Smith said. “I’m 100 percent.”
“I was kind of bummed I didn’t get in the team (in 2016). It was really a goal of mine. And I’ll be thrilled if I’m there and contending on the weekend for a gold medal.”
The Olympics golf tournament is scheduled for July 29-Aug. 1 at Kasumigaseki Country Club outside Tokyo, two weeks after The Open in England and a week before the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational in Memphis.
That timeline doesn’t faze Leishman.
“It would be huge,” Leishman said about the possibility of winning a gold medal. “I would love to contend for any medal, to be honest.
“Obviously, you want to go for gold. But something I never ever thought I would do would be have a chance to win an Olympic medal. And obviously I’ve got to get on the team first. But, yeah, I’m excited about the chance of being there and contending for that and really excited.”
