Twins send Gio Urshela to Angels, acquire Kyle Farmer from Reds

The Minnesota Twins completed a pair of trades on Friday, starting when they dealt infielder Gio Urshela to the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor league pitcher Alejandro Hidalgo.

Later Friday, Minnesota acquired infielder Kyle Farmer from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for minor league pitcher Casey Legumina.

Urshela, 31, spent one season with the Twins after being traded to Minnesota in March. He played a career-high 144 games and batted .285 with 13 home runs, 27 doubles and 64 RBIs.

Primarily a third baseman, Urshela heads to his fifth team. In 602 games with the Cleveland Guardians (2015, 2017), Toronto Blue Jays (2018), New York Yankees (2019-21) and Twins, Urshela is a .275 career batter with 62 home runs, 106 doubles and 256 RBIs.

Farmer, 32, played in 292 games for Cincinnati over the past two seasons after a slow start to his major league career. In 480 career games for the Los Angeles Dodgers (2017-18) and Reds (2019-22), he has batted .254 with 39 home runs, 61 doubles and 183 RBIs. He had career highs in hits (134), doubles (25) and RBIs (78) for the Reds in 2022 while batting .255.

He’s spent most of his time at shortstop and third base and has been a more effective batter against lefties, with an .837 OPS against them as opposed to .650 against right-handers.

Legumina, a 25-year-old right-hander, spent most of last season with Double-A Wichita and went 2-5 there with a 4.93 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 30 games (13 starts).

Hidalgo, 19, is a right-hander who spent 2022 with Class-A Inland Empire. He started 10 games and went 0-3 with a 4.62 ERA and 58 strikeouts in 39 innings.

The Angels designated left-hander Jhonathan Diaz for assignment in a corresponding roster move. Diaz, 26, went 2-1 with a 3.49 ERA in seven games (five starts) for the Angels over the past two seasons.
