Blue Jays hire Don Mattingly as bench coach

The Toronto Blue Jays hired Don Mattingly as bench coach on Wednesday.

Mattingly, 61, spent the past seven seasons managing the Miami Marlins. His contract was not renewed by the Marlins, who hired Skip Schumaker in late October to serve as their manager.

“It was great getting to know Don throughout this process and we are very excited about the experience he brings with him, from the variety of roles he has had over the years,” Blue Jays manager John Schneider said. “The organization and I are looking forward to his impact on the players and staff, as we look ahead to an exciting 2023 season.”

Mattingly was the longest-tenured and winningest manager in the history of the Marlins.

He posted a 443-587 record with Miami and was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2020 after guiding the Marlins to their first postseason berth since 2003. He also spent five seasons as manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers (2011-15).

Mattingly has an overall record of 889-950 as a manager.

He spent all 14 seasons of his playing career with the New York Yankees (1982-95). He was the 1985 American League MVP and a six-time All-Star.

Interim bench coach Casey Candaele will return to Triple-A Buffalo to manage the Bisons for the 2023 season.
