Christian Walker powers D-backs past Marlins

Humberto Castellanos pitched 5 2/3 scoreless innings and Christian Walker drove in three runs, leading the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 win over the host Miami Marlins on Tuesday night.

Castellanos (2-1) allowed four hits — all singles — and no walks, striking out four in his best and longest performance of the year.

Walker went 2-for-5 with a two-run double and a 435-foot homer. Pavin Smith also hit a solo homer for the D-backs, who have won six of their past eight games.

Joe Mantiply — Arizona’s sixth pitcher of the night — tossed a perfect ninth inning for his second save of the year.

Trevor Rogers (1-4) took the loss, allowing six hits, two walks and five runs in 4 1/3 innings.

Arizona opened the scoring in the second inning when Walker swung at a first-pitch fastball for his solo blast to center.

Smith made it 2-0 in the third with his 415-foot homer to right.

Miami put runners on the corners with no outs in the fourth, but Castellanos worked out of the jam with three straight infield outs.

Arizona stretched its lead in the fifth inning, getting run-scoring doubles by Ketel Marte (one RBI) and Walker (two RBIs).

For the second straight night, Miami scored four runs in the seventh inning. On both occasions, the Marlins cut their deficit to 5-4.

On Tuesday, Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a controversial two-run double with two outs and the bases loaded. Chisholm’s smash was initially called foul by the first base umpire, who was trying to get out of the way. After a lengthy conference, the umpires ruled it was an “inadvertent timeout” and awarded Chisholm a double.

Arizona manager Torey Lovullo argued and was ejected.

Former Marlins pitcher Caleb Smith was then brought in, and he allowed Jesus Aguilar’s two-run single before retiring pinch-hitter Miguel Rojas on a comebacker, ending the inning.

Arizona reliever Keynan Middleton worked a 1-2-3 eighth inning, and the game ended when second baseman Marte ranged to his left to rob a hit from Chisholm.
