Guardians pull away for 11-inning win over White Sox

Myles Straw delivered a two-run double in the 11th inning to spark the visiting Cleveland Guardians to a 10-7 win against the Chicago White Sox in the opener of a three-game series on Tuesday night.

Steven Kwan had four hits, two RBIs and two runs for the Guardians (81-67), who increased their American League Central lead over the second-place White Sox (76-72) to five games.

Cleveland starter Aaron Civale allowed two runs and four hits in five-plus innings. He struck out two and walked one.

Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase (3-4) blew just his fourth save in 40 opportunities this season but was credited with the win. He yielded two runs (one earned) in one inning.

Chicago starter Dylan Cease allowed one run and four hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one.

AJ Pollock had three hits, including a two-run homer in the 11th, and three RBIs for Chicago.

In the top of the 11th, Straw lined a double down the left field line off Jake Diekman (5-4) to score two runs and give the Guardians a 7-5 lead.

Kwan followed with his fourth single of the game to make it 8-5.

A sacrifice fly and throwing error stretched the lead to 10-5, which turned out to be key runs after Pollock went deep to make it 10-7.

Josh Naylor had an RBI single and Oscar Gonzalez hit a sacrifice fly to give Cleveland 5-3 lead in the 10th, but the White Sox answered with runs on an Elvis Andrus groundout and a two-out RBI single by Jose Abreu to tie it 5-5 and send the game to the 11th.

Cease was eligible for his 15th victory when he departed with a 3-1 lead, but the Guardians scored two runs off the Chicago bullpen in the seventh.

Kwan had an RBI single to make it 3-2, and Jose Ramirez beat out an infield single to drive in another run and tie the score.

Cleveland’s Andres Gimenez led off the second inning with an opposite-field triple and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.

Civale blanked the White Sox through the first five innings but left after the first two batters reached base in the sixth.

Eloy Jimenez delivered an RBI single off Nick Sandlin to tie the score 1-1, and a throwing error on a potential inning-ending double play scored two more runs to give the White Sox a 3-1 lead.
