Seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday is the new bench coach for the St. Louis Cardinals.
The team announced the 2023 coaching staff members Sunday for Oliver Marmol, who returns for his second season as manager.
In addition to Holliday, the other new additions are pitching coach Dusty Blake and hitting coach Turner Ward. Brandon Allen is the assistant hitting coach and Julio Rangel is the assistant pitching coach (bullpen).
Returning members of Marmol’s staff are Patrick Elkins (run production), Stubby Clapp (first base), Ron Warner (third base), Willie McGee (coach), Jamie Pogue (bullpen catcher) and Kleininger Teran (bullpen catcher).
Holliday, 42, was inducted into the Cardinals Hall of Fame in August. He played eight of his 15 seasons with St. Louis (2009-16).
Holliday, an outfielder, retired after the 2018 season with a .299 batting average, .889 OPS, 316 homers, 1,220 RBIs and 2,096 hits in 1,903 games with the Colorado Rockies, Oakland A’s, Cardinals and New York Yankees.
From 2019-22, Holliday worked as the outfield and hitting coach at Oklahoma State, where his brother, Josh, has been the head coach since 2013.
Ward, 57, was previously the hitting coach for the Cincinnati Reds (2019), Los Angeles Dodgers (2016-18) and Arizona Diamondbacks (2014-15).
Blake, 40, worked as the pitching coach at Duke from 2018-20 and has been a pitching strategist for the Cardinals since 2021.
The Cardinals (93-69) won the National League Central division title this season but were swept by the Philadelphia Phillies in the best-of-three wild-card round.
