Kansas City Royals left-hander Amir Garrett was suspended three games by MLB’s on-field operations office Monday for an Aug. 2 incident in when he threw a drink at a fan behind the dugout.
Garrett will appeal the suspension, which was scheduled to begin Monday. The discipline will be delayed until the appeals process is complete.
During the Royals’ 9-2 loss to the White Sox at Chicago on Aug. 2, a video posted online showed fans taunting Garrett, including one who was leaning onto the roof of the Royals’ dugout. Garrett then splashed a cup full of liquid in the direction of the fan.
Garrett had pitched one inning of relief in the loss, allowing no hits or runs with two walks.
The reliever has made 40 appearances this season with a 2-1 record and a 4.60 ERA. It’s Garrett’s first season in Kansas City after spending the first five MLB seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. Garrett is 12-18 lifetime with a 5.05 ERA and eight saves. He has 333 strikeouts over 287 innings.
The Royals begin a three-game road series against the Minnesota Twins on Monday. Their seven-day trip concludes with a four-game set against the Tampa Bay Rays.
