Baylor jumps Gonzaga to become seventh No. 1

Baylor jumped Gonzaga to become this season’s record-tying seventh No. 1 team in the AP Top 25 poll released Monday.

The Bears (15-1) extended their winning streak to 14 with victories last week against Iowa State and Oklahoma State. The Bears received 33 first-place votes and 1,591 total points, while the Bulldogs (20-1) earned 31 first-place votes and totaled 1,588 points.

Gonzaga lost its grip on the top spot after a four-week reign despite blowing out Santa Clara and BYU.

Baylor’s ascension matched the record set in 1982-83 with seven different No. 1 teams, the most since the poll debuted in 1948-49.

Duke, Auburn and Butler all dropped out of the top five after a combined 0-6 week.

Kansas (14-3) moved up three spots to No. 3 after wins against Oklahoma and Texas, followed by unbeaten San Diego State (19-0) and Florida State (16-2).

No. 6 Louisville (15-3) climbed five places and No. 7 Dayton (16-2) jumped six spots. The Blue Devils (15-3), Villanova (14-3) and Seton Hall (14-4) round out the top 10.

Michigan State (14-4) is 11th, followed by Oregon (15-4), Butler (15-3), West Virginia (14-3) and Kentucky (13-4).

Auburn (15-2) plummeted 12 places to No. 16 after suffering its first two losses of the season against Alabama and Florida. Maryland (14-4) held steady at No. 17, followed by Texas Tech (12-5), Iowa (13-5) and Memphis (14-3).

Iowa and No. 22 Arizona (13-5) both rejoined the poll.

Newcomers this week are No. 24 Rutgers (14-4) and No. 25 Houston (14-4), with Ohio State, Michigan and Wichita State all dropping out. The Buckeyes, who were ranked as high as No. 2 on Dec. 23, have lost five of their last six games.
